Note to anyone jailbreaking with redsn0w on Windows 7

by admin on Jul.31, 2010, under Uncategorized

I know that this whole “iPhone” is a “Mac” thing, but I’m trying to do this on a Windows 7 machine and I didn’t think I was asking too much but this “experience” was less than “impressive”. I don’t know when to use “these things” (refer: Joey off Friends).

Anyway, after going around and around following the most obvious how-to’s on Jailbreaking iPhone 3G with iOS 4.0.x, my little heart started to break as no matter which version of redsn0w I used, or which IPSW I used – redsn0w would either not recognise the IPSW or if it did, it’d only crash trying to upload the ram drive.  It was beginning to look like one of those “oh my god I’ve bricked my iPhone” moments and I didn’t ever want to be the guy that it happened to.

Am I the only person in the world trying to use redsn0w with Windows 7? Hell, anyone would think I was using Windows 98 (SE though, don’t be silly).  In all of the pages I read, there was not one mention of having to run redsn0w in compatibility mode. I guess I should have thought of this sooner, but honestly, it’s not fully compatible with Windows 7 and there wasn’t a single mention of this on one of the how-to’s?

What’s wrong with you scriptkiddies? Don’t make me think for myself, that’s not how this is supposed to work!

So, here’s my revised how-to, just for the 1 in a million idiot like myself.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G on iOS 4.0.1 with Windows “Don’t swear at me” 7:

  1. Update to iOS 4.0.1 using iTunes.
  2. Download iOS 4.0 from iClarified. I used iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw
  3. Download redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 or see here for latest version. Or find it in the wild here: Google search.
  4. Plug your iPhone in, close iTunes if it starts up and then switch your phone off.
  5. Unzip redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5, then change its properties to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2 and also check the “Run this program as an Administrator” option, just for good luck.
  6. Launch redsn0w, find the iOS 4.0 IPSW you downloaded in step 2.
  7. Following the redsn0w process.
  8. When/if your iPhone reboots, you may or may not have a jailbroken iPhone 3G running iOS 4.0.1! Congratulations/commiserations?!

Time will tell how this thing will perform, I got greedy and left all of the redsn0w jailbreak options enabled. Multitasking, home screen wallpapers and (yet to be seen) battery percentage. If we’re going to do this, might as well do it properly?!

Next step: following these instructions http://tinyurl.com/2c7fgd9 via @mattunderground or else I’ll be whining and going back to iOS 3.1.3 and will give up the pipe dream of having multitasking on 3G.

Also, can someone make Android work on iPhone 3G already, jeez.

Over and out. *squelch*
